Honestly, this book is out of date. It's very old and not a good textbook for a class. Several things in this text aren't in the literary canon anymore and it's missing several elements that are in the canon. This was a required text for a class, and it was one of the worst books I have ever had to buy for a class. The seller, however, was great. The book got to me quickly and I didn't have to worry about not having my book for class. The book came with a CD, but I couldn't tell you what was on it. The CD is old enough that my computer can't run it anymore: it's too new. The book is from 2002, with a reprint in 2004, meaning that it is several editions out of date. For a literature class that's not a good sign. The stories in the book are not very good, with only a few good ones few and far between. It's missing many authors and the sections on critical theory are either not explained well, or are wrong/misleading in a few cases. If you have to buy this for a class, I'm sorry. I would not buy this book for fun reading.
Horrible read. The author seemed to be using "filler words and phrases," as though he was expected to deliver a certain number of words or pages and not enough quality in HOW he phrased. Too much repetition. If this wasn't required reading for college classes, i doubt that anyone would buy it. I know we certainly don't intend to read it again. The few pieces of GOOD literary works included in the book aren't worth keeping the entire book. We are going to donate it to the next poor college student who is FORCED to read it so that they don't waste their money.
I purchased this book for my Intro to Literature class, as it is required. The book I received is slightly different than the one sold by my college, but the page numbers match up and all of the required readings are available. It is a great alternative to buying it from the college. I saved about $112.
I did not realize this was the 2nd edition and I needed the 8th. There was a lot of differences in the books. I had to buy a different edition. I was very disappointed.
I'm giving this 3 starts instead on 1 because the content is fine. BUT... this publication is a great argument for schools to make textbooks available in digital content. This thing is HEAVY and awkward to cart around. The pages are extremely thin (like a Bible thin) and I know so much more content could be integrated if we could use this on a tablet.
It was a second edition, my class wanted sixth. I had to look up the stories in the glossary, but it worked for me. Only a small few of the required reading were not in the book, but those were easy to find online. I almost didn't need the book because of the internet. I got 100% on my quizzez and the stories, plays and poems were interesting. The book does explain some things that are important to the class and helped me learn about writing. Oh, my book did not come with the cd... so I don't know if it is useful or not. I am expecting, at lowest, a B in this class.
This book was nice and was used for school. I had no complaints, I actually learned of some new writers from this book who are legends.
I have never felt so engaged while reading assignments from a literature book! The stories in it are all interesting and thought-provoking, and I also like the make of the book (the way it's thicker but shorter/narrower than other books). It was also shipped in good timing before school started, so I was able to start my Lit assignments ahead of time. If you need to take an English class, I highly recommend the AP/college course that uses this book!
